Great Strides - 2017 Summer School Program

Great Strides is a 10-day program, Monday
- Friday in July
Session 1 July Monday - Friday 8:00-9:30am
Session 2 July Monday - Friday 9:30-11:00am
Eachsession of Great Strides is $75.00.
Your student may enroll in one course in Session 1
AND/OR one course in Session 2.

Great Strides is an opportunity to get to know Cimarron Middle School through academic and elective programming designed to help students get the best start possible.
Great Strides Summer School Course Descriptions

Session 1: 8:00-9:30am

Cooking Around the States

Join us for two fun-filled weeks of cooking around the States. From Southern Comfort food to Cali Cuisine, you'll enjoy every bite of this experience!

Drawing and Painting

Students will experience Art through two-dimensional animal themed projects using colored pencil, pastels, watercolor paint, and other mixed media materials.

Language Arts 6th Grade

This course is for incoming 6th graders who have not yet mastered grade level reading and writing. In reading, students will understand and apply strategies in order to help them fully comprehend informational text as well as fiction. Students will also understand and apply grammar, usage, and mechanics to clearly communicate and support their thinking through writing.

Language Arts 8th Grade

This course is for incoming 8th graders who have not yet mastered grade level reading and writing. In reading, students will understand and apply strategies in order to help them fully comprehend informational text as well as fiction. Students will also understand and apply grammar, usage, and mechanics to clearly communicate and support their thinking through writing.

Math 6th Grade

This course is for incoming 6th graders who have not yet mastered grade level math. The math block is designed to create learning opportunities with computation and problem solving. Computation will be taught using and applying real-life skills including number sense and reviewing grade level standards. Problem solving will be taught using various strategies while focusing on fractions, decimals, and percents.

Math 7th Grade

This course is for incoming 7th graders who have not yet mastered grade level math. The math block is designed to create learning opportunities with computation and problem solving. Computation will be taught using and applying real-life skills including number sense and reviewing grade level standards. Problem solving will be taught using various strategies while focusing on fractions, decimals, and percents.

Reading Enrichment 6th Grade

This course is for incoming 6th graders. If you are an avid reader, this is a great opportunity for you to participate in enrichment opportunities designed to extend your thinking in the area of language arts!

Spanish

This class will be a fun and exciting introduction to the Spanish Language. Throughout this class students will learn greetings, colors, days, and other basic essentials of the Spanish Language.

 

Session 2: 9:30-11:00am

Games, Games, Games

Students will be introduced to individual and team games that will build self-esteem and self-confidence such as Cups Stacking and a variety of "low organized" games like Capture the Football, Volleyball, and many more. So come on out and enjoy the summer fun!

Sculpture

Students will experience art through three-dimensional projects using clay, paper maché, and other mixed media materials.

 

Great Strides - Your student may enroll in one course in Session 1 AND/OR one course in Session 2.

TheColts Corral program is designed to ensure a positive and smooth transition by providing strategies for student success in middle school.

Students will become familiar with Cimarron and meet new friends and staff members to ease the transition to our school.
Colts Corral Transition Program Description

What will my student learn at Colts Corral?

Students will have the opportunity to:

Receive an early copy of their schedule and find their core and elective classes

Gain an understanding of a typical middle school day

Learn how to manage multiple classes and homework

Learn how to get around the building with ease

Learn about the middle school culture and expectations

Learn organization tips

Learn effective ways to use the required planner

Colts Corral - If your student is going into 7th or 8th grade and you are new to Cimarron, you are welcome to attend any Colts Corral Session, but if you would like to be with grade level peers, we recommend Session 3.
